For years, Louis Downey, owner of Luxury Flush worked for local fire departments which led to him working as a paramedic in the film industry. To promote his work, he created a website so filmmakers could connect and hire him. Years later, a google search connected him with an opportunity to use his experience to give back to the community in a unique way.
“A group of Fireflies West, cyclists who raise money to support City of Hope and blood cancer research, wanted to find a medic with a support vehicle for their big ride and they found me online,” shared Louis. “Here we are six years later and I look forward to this ride down the coast every year.”
Each year in October, as 50 cyclists journey the 550 miles down the Californian coast from San Francisco to Los Angeles, Louis follows them for the six days to provide medic support and other assistance as needed. Louis donates his time and enjoys this friendship that supports a worthy fight.
“Most of these guys have names on their bike of someone who is battling cancer or has battled cancer,” continued Louis. “On the last day of the ride, riders share why they participate during an open mic session. They tell stories of family and friends who have been on this journey of cancer. These guys have such heart and passion to help how they can. It’s an honor to be part of their support team.”
Each day of the ride consists of 70 to 100 miles, depending on the terrain. Riders pay their own expenses so 100% of the sponsorships they secure go to City of Hope and directly impact blood cancer research.
“This partnership is personal for me as my oldest son has type 1 diabetes. I participate in his honor,” shares Louis. “We all can do our part and this is something I can do to help.”
